Christena, otherwise known as Stena, received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Centenary College of Louisiana and her Master of Science Degree in Social Work from The University of Texas at Arlington. In addition to her work at DCTC, Stena is the Clinical Supervisor at an inpatient substance abuse treatment center. Prior to that, she worked for another inpatient substance abuse treatment facility, a psychiatric hospital treating severe and persistent mental illness and as an outpatient counselor to individuals, children, families and relationships both in Texas and Florida.
Stena has a wide variety of work experience which results in a high level of skill in treating a multitude of concerns. A great deal of her experience involves working with young children, teens and families. She utilizes play therapy skills, including sand tray work, to help children as young as 3. She enjoys involving the parents and family members to help improve the child's behavior. Additionally, she has experience working with children who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and are high-functioning (formerly known as Aspergers).
Stena has an equal amount of experience treating adult and teenaged clients who struggle with substance abuse, relationship issues, depression, anxiety, Bipolar Disorder and sexual trauma. In her work with relationships, her goal is to assist them in improving communication skills. Stena is an ally for the LGBTQ community and is skilled at treating individuals and providing Relationship Counseling regardless of sexuality. This includes individuals who seek to transition genders to whatever degree they feel comfortable.
Stena utilizes the Enneagram to help her clients learn more about themselves and identify how to build on their strengths and manage challenges effectively. Additionally, she is trained in Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectic Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Family Systems and Solution Focused Therapy. She is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which is utilized to treat anxiety-based disorders including PTSD and emotional/sexual trauma.
In her personal time, Stena enjoys Zumba, traveling, learning about different cultures and playing with her dogs Angel, a mixed breed, and Zeus, a German Sheppard.
