Melissa is a Licensed Professional Counselor – Intern under the supervision of Tara Cavanaugh, LPC-S. Melissa earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a double major in Criminal Justice and Psychology and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the prestigious Regis University in Denver, Colorado.
Melissa has worked in community mental health centers and residential treatment programs with a wide range of diagnosis. She has provided an array of services from crisis intervention, play therapy, DBT group therapy, family and individual therapy for families, young children, parents, adults and adolescents. Melissa is enthusiastic and devoted to early intervention services with a focus on working with young children by using play therapy, providing psychoeducation in development, empowering parents and providing individual therapy to parents. In addition, Melissa has education and training in treating symptoms of trauma.
Melissa focuses on a client-centered approach. This ‘client first’ focus helps to build strong therapeutic relationships. Melissa utilizes mindfulness, self-awareness and existentialism in therapy. Melissa is EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) trained, an effective treatment for PTSD (posttraumatic stress disorder), anxiety and mood disorders. Melissa is passionate about integrated and holistic care and is trained in treating depression, anxiety, early childhood diagnoses, grief, loss and trauma.
Melissa likes reading, jogging, walking her dogs, yoga and hiking. Melissa is adventurous and does not shy away from uncharted territory in her personal life or with clients.
