Gender-Affirming Mental Health Assessments

Many of these gender-affirming interventions require a psychological or mental health assessment before a court or medical professional’s approval. Dallas Counseling and Treatment Center provides Gender-Affirming Mental Health Assessments to individuals seeking these legal or medical interventions.

Assessments and letters are provided for the following purposes:

  • Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS)

  • Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

  • Legal Name Change

  • Legal Gender Marker Change

Affirmative Therapy is an approach to working with gender-diverse individuals, which affirms your gender identity and gender expression. Affirmative therapists understand that a person’s sexual orientation and gender identity cannot be changed and is not the root cause of their problems. Therapy intentionally explores your unique journey while providing support and respect without any preconceived notions or judgment. Our clinicians at Dallas Counseling and Treatment Center receive training to provide Affirmative Therapy to individuals interested in exploring their gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, and sexual identity. Throughout treatment, we can help you address the biases you experience regarding gender and sexuality and other intersectionalities such as race, ethnicity, and religion.

Affirmative Therapists receive training to:

  • Acknowledge the challenges of LGBTQ+ individuals

  • Offer a safe space for LGBTQ+ individuals

  • Provide appropriate support and resources

  • Explore the impact of societal stigmas

  • Approach sexual orientation and gender identity in a non-pathologizing manner

  • Provide support through the coming out or transitioning processes

  • Assist in the resolution of contradictory beliefs and needs

FAQ

Can I schedule a gender-affirming health assessment if I reside out of state?

Since mental health licenses are state-based, our therapists are only licensed to practice within the state of Texas. You may reside out of state but you must physically be in the state of Texas at the time of your assessment. This applies regardless of if your assessment occurs in-person or via telehealth.

Will I be under the care of a therapist?

Yes, but only during the assessment. We welcome you to continue individual therapy beyond the assessment if you and your therapist determine it would be beneficial.

When will I know if I meet the requirements for a gender-affirming mental health letter of support?

The evaluating therapist should be able to inform you at the end of the session. However, they may need to discuss your case with our Affirmative Therapy Coordinator before making a decision.

What information will you assess at the in-peron appointment?

Your therapist will identify if you meet the criteria for Gender Dysphoria.

How much does the evaluation cost?

The total cost of a Gender-Affirming Mental Health Assessment is $125.

Does insurance cover the cost of a gender-affirming mental health assessment?

These assessments are performed by therapists with an associate-level license under the supervision of a fully licensed clinical supervisor. Therapists with this licensure are unable to contract with insurance companies, therefore, we cannot submit a claim to your insurance carrier for this assessment.

When will I receive my letter of support?

If you meet the criteria, your letter will be sent to you by email within 72 business hours of your assessment.

If my medical provider will not accept my letter of support, can you make any revisions?

Yes. However, we can only make minor revisions to our letter as it contains all the required information per the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) standards of care. While you are certainly not obligated to provide specifics about your medical condition, we can add details upon your request. You are welcome to contact our Records Department with any of these requests.

Physical injuries are easy to see and, therefore, simpler to treat. However, not all wounds are physical; some are internal or emotional, making them harder to diagnose.
