Carissa is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker - Supervisor who holds a Master's Degree in Social Work from Indiana University in Indianapolis. Prior to joining DCTC, Carissa was the Clinical Director for outpatient services at a Dallas area domestic violence and incest recovery non-profit counseling center. While there, she played a role in developing multiple counseling programs to serve our community. Before accepting that position, Carissa worked as a therapist and then Clinical Supervisor at an outpatient counseling center in Indianapolis. While there, she provided in-home counseling to families and individuals who were victims of sexual abuse or whose children were exhibiting sexually maladaptive behaviors.
Carissa specializes in the treatment of sexual and emotional trauma, PTSD, domestic violence, grief and loss, mood disorders, depression and anxiety. She is trained to work with children, teens, adults, couples and families with complex situations. She is a step-mom who understands the unique challenges and dynamics of blended families. She is a Prepare and Enrich facilitator and is trained in the Gottman Method, which she integrates into her work with couples. Carissa is comfortable working with LGBTQ couples and individuals.
Carissa is in the final stages of becoming trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) which has been proven effective at treating anxiety-related disorders, PTSD, trauma and a multitude of other disorders. She also holds a national certification in Trauma Focused - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, an evidenced based treatment modality for children and teens that have experienced sexual, emotional, physical or psychological trauma. She has specialized training in the use of Sandtray Therapy to target healing within family relationships.
Carissa is comfortable treating issues of faith and spirituality and is open to integrating religious-based counseling at the client's request but does not utilize it unless invited.
Carissa has provided continuing education to therapists presenting on many topics related to sexual and emotional trauma and domestic violence. She has also provided education to therapists on appropriate self care. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker - Supervisor providing guidance and supervision to newly licensed social workers.
In her spare time, Carissa enjoys singing in a choir, attending musicals and sporting events, and training for half marathons and other running events.
